What is Migration Cover?

Migration Cover is a new type of insurance created specifically for migrants. We have listened to the concerns of migrants and developed an insurance product, that we feel, will go a long way in providing a level of protection, in this life changing decision.

The Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) provides detailed information on the coverage this policy offers and you should always refer to this document when considering your own personal circumstances, including, if this product is right for you.

Is there a cancellation or cooling off period?

You may cancel you policy within twenty-one (21) days of purchasing a policy from us, if you:

  • Decide that the policy does not meet your requirements, AND
  • Have not commenced your travel to Your Host Country, AND
  • Have not made, or do not intend to make, or have not experienced an event whereby you could make a claim under the policy, AND
  • You return Your policy documents to us. Please provide us with written confirmation of your cancellation.

How do I purchase Migration Cover?

Is Travel Insurance included in the policy?

Travel Insurance is a selectable add-on through the purchase process for both the Return Package and the Involuntary Redundancy Package. If you purchase the “Complete Migration Cover Package” then travel insurance is included.

Are my details secure when I purchase online?

Yes they are. Our payment gateway is secured with industrial standard 128 bit SSL encryption which has never been penetrated. Whilst you make payment, your personal details and credit card data are encrypted. When you are entering your credit card and personal information you are connected to a secure server. Our website utilises the popular “Secure Socket Layer” security.

Whilst we offer the protection of SSL encryption, many financial institutions also provide consumers with credit card protection. This protects you if your card is used fraudulently to pay for goods which you have no knowledge of, or did not order yourself. Your financial institution maybe liable for the fraudulent balance owed. In these situations the customer is refunded by the financial institution for that transaction.

Can I renew my Migration Cover Policy?

Yes, you can renew Your policy if you are eligible. You will be invited to renew nearing the end of your current policy. To ensure that the policy can be renewed, it is imperative that you ensure we have your correct contact details, including postal address.

How do I update my details for Migration Cover?

Updating personal details is as easy as sending our office an email at update@migrationcover.com and quoting Your name and policy number. Alternatively, please complete the Contact Us form and select Update Details from the drop down menu.

We will verify this request on receipt of the form. Remember to Contact Us anytime you change your residential or postal address.

Who is eligible to apply for Migration Cover?

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for this policy, You must:

  • Be over the age of 18
  • Be under the age of 60 at the time of applying for this Policy
  • Be Migrating, under a Visa with work rights, to a Host Country or returning to a Host Country with Permanent Resident rights
  • If You have applied for Family Cover, your Spouse/DeFacto/Life Partner must be under the age of 60, and Your dependants under the age of 21 or 25 if studying
  • You are not eligible for this policy if:
  • You are under the age of 18 or over the age of 60 at the time of applying for this Policy.

How long after I arrive in my new country can I apply for Migration Cover?

You can apply for a Migration Cover Policy, within two (2) years of a Permanent Visa or a Temporary Work Visa (with more than 1 year validity) being approved within Your Host Country. You must meet the eligibility criteria listed in the Product Disclosure Statement at the time of applying for cover. If you are in doubt, please use the Contact Us form and one of our representatives will be in touch with you to discuss your application.

Can I upgrade my package?

Yes, You can upgrade your package at any time during your policy period, unless there is an ongoing claim. Requests for changes may be made at anytime by using our Contact Us form, or by emailing us at upgrade@migrationcover.com and detailing the level of cover You require, together with your name and policy number. We will then contact you. Please note that any policy upgrade will not take effect until the receipt of any payments of insurance premiums.

Can anyone apply for Migration Cover?

To be eligible for this policy, You must:

  • Be Migrating, or have migrated (in the past two (2) years) under a Visa with work rights, to a Host Country or returning to a Host Country with Permanent Resident rights

Which visa do I need to be on to apply for Migration Cover?

You can apply for a Migration Cover Policy, if you hold or intend to hold a valid Permanent Visa or a Temporary Work Visa (with more than 1 year validity) within Your Host Country.

What is meant by country of embarkation?

The term “Country of Embarkation” means the country where You commence Your travel. Travel insurance is only available to you if you have purchased it as an add-on, or have purchased the “Complete Migration Cover Package”.

What is meant by destination or host country?

The term Host Country means the country to which you will be migrating or have migrated to with a valid issued Visa. Our Product Disclosure Statement only refers to the Host Country which means the destination country you have migrated to or are migrating to.

How do I receive my policy documents?

Policy documents are issued immediately upon acceptance by the underwriter and payment of the policy.  You can email us at cover@migrationcover.com for a copy of Your policy documentation at any time. Alternatively, please complete the Contact Us form and one of representatives will be in contact.

How far in advance of travelling to my Host Country can I apply for Migration Cover?

12 months prior to your arrival.

Cancellation cover for Your outward journey is effective from the date of issue of Your policy. Cover enacts on the date of arrival in Your Host Country; Travel Cover (other than cancellation), if you have purchased this as part of an add-on or package, is effective for 30 days prior to Your arrival date in Your Host Country.

I have already migrated, can I apply for Migration Cover?

Yes you can apply if you meet the eligibility criteria, and have migrated within the past two (2) years of your visa being activated.

I have moved to my new Host Country. How do I renew my policy?

How can I pay for my Migration Cover policy?

Payment for Your Migration Cover policy is through our online payment gateway. Payment by credit card or debit card is currently the only acceptable format.

What currency can I pay in?

We take 5 currencies: British Pounds, Euros, US Dollars, Australian Dollars, and New Zealand Dollars. Some countries will have an auto default to USD.

When does the cover begin and end on my policy?

If you are purchasing this product from a Country of Embarkation:

  • The policy enacts the day You travel if you have purchased the add-on travel insurance, or is part of the “Complete Migration Cover Package”. Cancellation cover for outward journey is effective from date of issue. Cover enacts on the date of arrival in Your Host Country; travel cover (other than cancellation) is effective for 30 days prior to that date.
  • On Your arrival in Your new Host Country, You are covered for a period of 12 months from Your arrival date.
  • If You are purchasing Your product within a Host Country:
  • Your cover enacts on the date of purchase and will continue for a period of 12 months.

Who is covered under a family policy?

You, Your spouse and dependant children are covered.

Dependants must be under twenty one (21) years of age or under twenty five (25) years of age if they are a full time student and primarily dependent on you for maintenance and support. There is no limit as to how many Dependants You can have under this policy

Spouse means your husband or wife, de-facto or life partner with whom You have continuously cohabited for a period of six (6) months or more and with whom You are living, or intend to live with, in the Host Country

You and your spouse must be under 60 at the time of your application.

What is the maximum age of children on the family policy?

Dependant children must be below the age of 21. If the dependant child is a full time student then the age of the dependant child must be below 25. If you require more information please complete the Contact Us form and a representative will contact you to assist.

Is travel insurance covered in the policy?

Travel Insurance is available for purchase as either a single journey or annual multi-trip insurance policy.

Travel Insurance must be purchased as an add-on or is included in the “Complete Migration Cover Package”. If purchased, with a package, travel insurance provides up to 30 days of travel, starting on Your date of departure to Your Host Country.

Additionally, we recognise that whilst you are in Your Host Country you may wish to “see the sights”. For this, we also provide travel insurance for trips you make whilst in Your Host Country. This covers holidays of up to 30 days for any one trip and more than 300 km from your Host home.

Is the journey to my Host Country covered?

You are covered for the journey to Your Host Country for a maximum period of up to 30 days from departure until arrival in the Host Country.

What is the excess?

Under certain sections of the Product Disclosure Statement, insurance claims will be subject to an excess. This is the first part of each claim that You are responsible for paying, depending on the level of cover you have purchased. The amounts are specified for each section on Your Policy Schedule.

How do I reduce my excess?

The excess amount that applies is dependent on the package You have chosen. There is no opportunity to decrease your excesses in this product range.

How do I make a claim?

To make a general claim, you will need to contact the Migration Cover Claims Assist line. Please see the How to Claim section of the website. Our staff will assist you in submitting Your claim to the underwriter. Migration Cover is there to assist you; Migration Cover cannot authorise any claims as this is dependent on the insurer accepting your claim.

In the event of a medical emergency, you should contact the Medical Emergency Assistance Company who must be notified within 48 hours of admission to hospital, and for curtailment, prior to departure back to your Country of Embarkation/Host Country as applicable. This Medical Emergency Assistance Company has direct underwriter authority.

How long after a claimable incident am I required to submit a claim?

It is advisable to contact Migration Cover Claims Assist as soon as you become aware of a claimable event. In all cases, it is a requirement that the claim is lodged within 31 days. We encourage all claims to be reported to Us, so that we may provide You with guidance in submitting Your claim to the underwriter.

In the event of a medical emergency, you should contact the Medical Emergency Assistance Company who must be notified within 48 hours of admission to hospital, and for curtailment, prior to departure back to Your Country of Embarkation/Host Country as applicable.
